A urinalysis is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate urine’s physical, chemical, and microscopic characteristics. It is a non-invasive test that provides critical insights into kidney function, hydration levels, and the presence of infections or systemic conditions like diabetes or liver disease. The analysis typically examines urine colour, clarity, and odour, followed by tests for pH, specific gravity, protein, glucose, ketones, and other substances. These results help us identify abnormalities and guide further medical evaluation.
Microscopic analysis is another essential component of urinalysis, where a sample is examined for elements like red and white blood cells, bacteria, crystals, or epithelial cells. The detection of these components can signal urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or other pathologies.
Urinalysis is widely used in routine health check-ups, and ongoing monitoring of chronic conditions, making it a cornerstone in medical diagnostics.
At Nith Valley Animal Hospital, we complete urinalysis testing in-house.
