Dr. Cristin McCarty-Van Straaten was born and raised in Saskatchewan. Cristin grew up with a cat and multiple dogs in her home, many of whom she trained in obedience and agility.  By the age of 6, she had her first horse and continues to ride and train horses.  Dr. McCarty-Van Straaten showed her many horses in hunters and jumpers in Western Canada and achieved her HA level with the Canadian Pony Club. Her childhood dream was to become a veterinarian.

In addition to her passion for animals, Dr. McCarty-Van Straaten was an avid athlete within the sport of rowing. She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI on a rowing scholarship where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Public Health. She returned to Canada to compete as a member of the Canadian National Womens Rowing Team from 2006-2010. She has competed all over the world, most notably earning a Gold and Silver medal in the 2007 Pan American Games.

After her rowing career, she returned to university where she completed her PhD from the University of Guelph in Injury Biomechanics in 2013 with focus on racehorse lameness and joint disease. She worked as a biomechanist for 3 years within the field of forensic engineering before deciding to return to school to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian.  She graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2020 and started her veterinary career with a large animal practice in Waterloo Region working primarily on dairy cows, small ruminants and horses. In 2022, she transitioned to small animal emergency medicine and has worked at the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Waterloo Region for the past 2 years. She started MVS Equine Veterinary Services in 2022 and continues to work on horses specializing in equine lameness.
